Thornaby New Town, Teesside, 1968

Woolco at Thornaby, Teesside, was the second to open in the UK, but the first to meet the size and range aspirations of the parent company. It traded long hours, from 10am to 8pm five days a week, Tuesday to Saturday.

The new town replaced RAF Thornaby, which had served Britain with distinction from 1930 to 1958. Woolco was its anchor shop, with 68,000 square feet (6,317 m2) of salesfloor and a further 30,000 sq. ft. (2,787 m2) of stockroom and ancillary accomodation, standing on a 3 acre (1.21 hectare) site.
